Room 3, where the pool table is located, will have open hours through the week to enjoy a friendly or competitive game of pool. All equipment needed is supplied by the Recreation Department.

10 Facts About Pool:
1. First world championship
- Have you ever wondered which sport was the first on the planet to have a world championship? Probably not, but if you do, it was billiards back in 1873.
2. What's the green part made of?
- The felt on a pool table has pretty much stayed the same for the past 400 years. It's mostly wool, but there are some manufacturers who use wool and nylon blends.
3. Worried about injuries?
- Pool is the game for you - it's one of the safest sports in the world. There's nothing to fall off, no one trying to hit you or tackle you, and none of that ridiculous running and jumping malarkey. In fact, you'll only manage to work up a sweat if you end up getting into a heated match and stressing about the win. What a perfect sport!
4. Old dogs, new tricks
- Research suggests that billiards champions are the oldest on average for any sport at 35.6 years. This just proves that it's never too late to start.
5. Chalk that isn't chalk
- The chalk you use in the tip of the cue doesn't actually contain real chalk. It used to, but is now a mix of silica and an abrasive substance like corundum or aloxite.
6. Pool ball materials
- The balls themselves have changed for the better, too. Now, they're made from resin, but back in the day, they were made from ivory.
7. Who did it first?
- It's hard to say when the first pool table was built, but this honour is usually bestowed upon King Louis XI of France. According to stories, his table was made of stone with a cloth covering, and had just one hole in the middle to aim for.
8. The invention of banks
- Originally, the walls, or banks, on a pool table were just there to stop the balls falling off the edge. Savvy players quickly realised that they could bounce the balls off these walls (which were originally just rails) to nail their shot.
9. The great leveler
- Pool is one of those sports that has brought people together for centuries - both the masses and the elite have played together since its inception.
10. Where it all began
- It's believed that pool and billiards originally evolved from a croquet-type game somewhere in the 15th century, probably in France, but certainly in northern Europe.
